Give them time. In class. This helps discussion, in my experience. I gave my students about 20 minutes to research and prepare a powerpoint and presentation on a modern work that references the classical work. This was the work that two of the students presented.
The students made reference to the clothed/unclothed nature of the piece, the commodification of beauty and fabrics, the consumerism of society, and the visual connection to Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos, which we studied earlier in the semester.
I was pleased with what they developed and how they thought about other images and ideas from other classes. I wish we could better “capture” these types of experiences for assessment of student learning. Because these students *did* learn.
